Historical Tourism of Bishnupur

Historical Tourism of Bishnupur

Bishnupur, located in Bankura district of West Bengal (22.38° N, 88.27° E), is famous for its rich terracotta temple tradition. Its temples are unique examples of medieval temple architecture in eastern India. The Malla rulers constructed these monuments in their capital, Bishnupur, mainly between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The temples display an extraordinary combination of architecture, sculpture and narrative decoration. In 1997, the temples of Bishnupur were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The history of the Malla rulers, remarkable temple architecture, terracotta art and the traditional Baluchari sari have made Bishnupur an important centre of historical tourism.

The Malla dynasty rose to prominence in the seventh century CE. Adi Malla was regarded as the founder of the dynasty. The word Malla means a wrestler. According to popular tradition, Adi Malla became highly skilled in wrestling during his early life and came to be recognised in society as Adi Malla, or the unrivalled wrestler. Later, he acquired control over Laugram and several neighbouring villages from the ruler of Padampur near Jaypur. His successor, Jay Malla, expanded the kingdom and shifted the capital to Bishnupur. Subsequent rulers gradually extended the boundaries of the kingdom. It is noteworthy that the rule of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals did not cause significant damage to Malla rule. The Sultanate rulers showed little interest in this forested region, while the Mughals collected revenue on only a few occasions. In general, the Malla rulers maintained cordial relations with the Mughals.

The forty-ninth ruler of Bishnupur was Bir Hambir, a contemporary of Akbar. After coming into contact with the renowned Vaishnava scholar Srinivas Acharya, he became attracted to Vaishnava ideals, converted to Vaishnavism and began patronising the Vaishnava tradition. In around 1600 CE, he constructed the Rasmancha. The sacred Vaishnava festival of Ras was celebrated in its precincts, and images of Radha and Krishna from different parts of the town were brought here for public viewing. The Ras festival continued to be regularly held here until 1932. Later rulers, particularly Raghunath Singh, constructed several important temples. Among them, the Jor Bangla Temple, built in 1655 CE, and the Shyam Rai Temple, built in 1643 CE, are particularly notable. Other important temples include the Madan Mohan, Kalachand, Radha Madhav and Radhashyam temples. These architectural monuments reflect the wealth of the Malla court, its religious commitment and the high level of craftsmanship of its artisans.

The temples of Bishnupur were built mainly of brick and terracotta, although laterite stone and stucco were also used in some structures. The architectural forms of these temples appear to have been inspired by the domestic architecture of rural Bengal, particularly houses constructed of wood, bamboo and thatch. Consequently, many temples have curved and sloping rooflines resembling those of Bengali huts, although they were constructed as permanent brick structures. Three major architectural styles can be identified in Bishnupur. The first is the Rekha Deul style, in which a curvilinear shikhara rises above the sanctum and is crowned by an amalaka or kalasha. A related form is the Pirha Deul style, characterised by a stepped pyramidal tower, which appears to reflect the influence of Odisha’s architectural tradition. The second is the Chala or hut style, in which the temple resembles a thatched rural house of Bengal. The Jor Bangla Temple is the finest example of this style. It consists of two interconnected do-chala structures, one functioning as a porch or mandapa and the other as the sanctum. The third is the Ratna style, in which one or more pinnacles or ratnas are placed over the roof. The Shyam Rai Temple is a celebrated Pancha Ratna temple, with five pinnacles and an elaborately ornamented roof.

Terracotta decoration is the most attractive and distinctive feature of Bishnupur’s temple art. The exterior surfaces of almost all the major temples are richly decorated with terracotta plaques and panels. Terracotta work can be found around the temples and, in some cases, even in their interiors. The panels predominantly depict themes associated with Vaishnavism, particularly episodes from Krishna Lila, as well as stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. At the same time, the artists represented subjects unrelated to religious narratives, including royal life, hunting, warfare, bullock carts, boats and scenes of everyday social activity. These sculptures therefore provide valuable evidence of the cultural life of medieval Bengal. The Shyam Rai Temple contains one of Bengal’s richest collections of terracotta art and is particularly notable for its rhythmic representation of Krishna Lila. Bishnupur’s sculptural art may also have absorbed certain elements of Islamic decorative traditions, similar to features found in the palaces of Muslim rulers. Nevertheless, its visual language remains fundamentally rooted in Hindu and Vaishnava traditions. The fine detail and depth of the terracotta plaques often resemble stone carving, demonstrating the high technical skill of local artisans. In monuments such as the Jor Bangla, Kalachand and Madan Mohan temples, sculpture and architecture are remarkably integrated. The decorative programme not only enhances the architectural character of the temples but also brings religious and social scenes to life.

The temple architecture and terracotta sculptures of Bishnupur constitute the principal attractions for historical tourists. A visitor to Bishnupur would normally include the Rasmancha, Jor Bangla Temple, Shyam Rai Temple, Madan Mohan Temple, Radha Laljiu Temple, Radhashyam Temple, Nandalal Temple, Kalachand Temple, Madangopal Jiu Temple, Radha Madhav Temple, Mrinmoyee Temple, Jugal Kishore Temple and Jor Shreni Temple among the major religious heritage sites. The remains associated with the courtly and administrative history of the Malla rulers are also important attractions, including the Bara Pathar Darwaza, Chhota Pathar Darwaza, Stone Chariot, Gumgarh and Lalbai Mahal. Tourists are also attracted to Bishnupur’s traditional Baluchari saris, terracotta objects and Dokra art.

Apart from the pleasant weather between September and March, tourist activity is relatively low during the hotter months because of the region’s intense heat. At present, a terracotta market is organised at Jor Shreni Temple during weekends, and tourist footfall increases on those days. The Bishnupur Music Festival is generally held towards the end of December, which also attracts additional visitors. The West Bengal Tourism Department does not publish official annual figures for the number of tourists visiting Bishnupur. However, it is generally estimated that more than one hundred thousand tourists visit the town annually. The nearby Jaypur Forest and its eco-tourism facilities further contribute to the development of historical tourism in Bishnupur.

Price Revolution
