মহাফেজখানা বা লেখ্যাগারগুলি সাধারণ জনতার জন্য নয় মূলত গবেষক, ঐতিহাসিক, আইনবিদ, চিত্র পরিচালক প্রভৃতি পেশার লোকজন তাদের গবেষণার কাজে লেখ্যাগারে নথি পত্র দেখতে পারেন।
লেখ্যাগার পরিচালনা ও সংরক্ষিত নথির ভিত্তিতে লেখ্যাগগুলিকে বিভিন্ন ভাগে ভাগ করা হয়েছে।

The categorization of archives, based on the administration and preserved documents is as follows.
Government Archives: These archives are established by the central or state government or local administration. Such archives are referred to as government archives. Different countries have one or more government-run archives, such as the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in the United States and the National Archives of India in India. They preserve various historical, administrative, and legal documents, maps, manuscripts, etc.
Commercial Archives: These archives are maintained by profitable organizations, mainly preserving the historical and commercial records of their institutions. For example, the Tata Central Archive in India, which is the country's first commercial archive.
Non-Profit Archives: These types of archives are established by individual or non-profit organizations, sometimes receiving financial support from the government or commercial entities. These archives primarily preserve documents related to the social activities of the organization and its affiliated individuals. An example is the Wisconsin Historical Society's archive.
Academic Archives: Archives operated by colleges, universities, and other educational institutions are known as academic archives. This kind of archive collects and preserves documents related to the institution or its affiliated individuals. For example, the archive at Stanford University.
Film Archives: Specialized archives primarily focused on preserving documents related to the history of cinema, including documents, posters, manuscripts, etc. An example is the National Film Archive of India.
Music Archives: Similar to film archives, music archives focus on collecting and preserving documents related to music. Archive of Indian Music is an example.
Additionally, there are other types of archives such as religious archives, newspaper archives, web archives, etc.
