Ajanta Caves as a Historical Tourist Destination

  • ছাদ সাধারণত খিলানযুক্ত বা বাঁকানো;
  • গুহার পিছনের অংশ ছিল অর্ধবৃত্তাকার;
  • গুহার সম্মুখভাগে একটি বড় ঘোড়ার খুরের মতো আকৃতির জানালা থাকত, যাকে চৈত্য জানালা বলা হয়;
  • ভিতরে সারিবদ্ধ স্তম্ভের মাধ্যমে গুহাকে একটি মধ্যবর্তী প্রধান অংশ এবং দুই পাশের অংশে ভাগ করা হতো;
  • দুই পাশের অংশ পিছনের অর্ধবৃত্তাকার অংশের চারপাশে ঘুরে যাওয়ার পথ তৈরি করত, যাতে ভক্তরা স্তূপকে প্রদক্ষিণ করতে পারতেন;

Ajanta Caves

The Ajanta Caves, located about 59 kilometres from Jalgaon and 107 kilometres north of Aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), on the banks of the Waghora River along the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats, are among the most important historical and archaeological sites and cultural heritage monuments in India. The caves are situated on the Ajanta Hills, whose horseshoe-shaped cliff was excavated to create the cave complex. There are a total of 30 Buddhist caves at Ajanta, some of which were completed while others remained unfinished. Ajanta provides valuable information about the society, religion, architecture, clothing, ornaments, social customs and political life of ancient India. In recognition of its exceptional artistic, religious and historical significance, the Ajanta Caves were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. Today, Ajanta is one of India’s most important destinations for historical and cultural tourism.

In 1819, the caves were rediscovered by John Smith, an officer of the Madras Regiment of the British Army, while he was out hunting. In 1844, the Orientalist art historian James Fergusson commissioned Robert Gill, an officer of the British Army, to make copies of the paintings at Ajanta. The result of Gill’s twenty years of work was around 30 paintings, but 25 of them were destroyed in a fire at the exhibition held at the Sydenham Palace in 1866. Subsequently, in 1875, a team led by John Griffiths produced 335 copies of the Ajanta paintings. These efforts helped generate wider international interest in the murals of Ajanta. In 1903, the British government enacted legislation for the protection of Ajanta, and during the 1920s, with financial assistance from the Nizam’s government, efforts were made to bring experts from Italy to undertake conservation and restoration of the paintings. After independence, in 1953, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) formally assumed full responsibility for the maintenance and conservation of the Ajanta Caves. Although several wall paintings remain damaged, conservation efforts continue. The Forest Department and the Government of Maharashtra also cooperate in managing the protected area surrounding the caves.

The construction of Ajanta broadly spans the period from the second century BCE to the sixth century CE. Its development can be divided into two major phases. The first phase, associated with the Hinayana or early Buddhist tradition, dates mainly to the second and first centuries BCE, during the period of the Satavahana rulers. These early caves emphasised the symbolic representation of the Buddha through stupas and other aniconic symbols. After an interval of approximately four centuries, a second major phase of construction took place during the fifth and sixth centuries CE under the Vakatakas and their feudatories. This later phase was associated with Mahayana Buddhism, which introduced prominent images of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas.

A total of 30 caves were excavated from the volcanic basalt rock of the hill. Five caves—Caves 9, 10, 19, 26 and 29—are chaitya-grihas, or prayer halls, while the remaining caves are viharas, used as residences and centres of study for Buddhist monks. Caves 9 and 10 among the chaityas, and Caves 8, 12, 13 and 15A among the viharas, belong to the early Hinayana phase. Cave 10 is generally regarded as the oldest surviving cave at Ajanta. The architectural style of this early phase is comparatively simple and restrained, and relatively few wall paintings survive from this period.

The early chaitya-grihas have several distinctive architectural features:

  • The roofs are generally vaulted or curved.

  • The rear portion of the cave is apsidal or semicircular.

  • The façade contains a large horseshoe-shaped window known as the chaitya arch or chaitya window.

  • Rows of pillars divide the interior into a central nave and two side aisles.

  • The side aisles continue around the semicircular rear portion, creating a circumambulatory passage through which devotees could walk around the stupa.

  • At the centre of the rear wall stands a rock-cut chaitya or stupa, which served as the principal object of worship.

The viharas of this phase served as residences and communal spaces for Buddhist monks. They generally consisted of a large central hall surrounded by smaller chambers on three sides. These chambers functioned as living quarters for the monks.

The second, Mahayana phase retained many elements of the earlier architectural tradition but introduced considerable innovation in architecture and sculpture. During this period, the walls of the caves were extensively decorated with magnificent murals. The paintings were executed primarily using a tempera technique. At the same time, elaborate sculptures and decorative elements were added to pillars, capitals, doorways, shrine areas and façades. Images of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas became increasingly prominent, reflecting the religious developments of the Mahayana tradition.

Caves 5, 24 and 29 at Ajanta were left unfinished. These incomplete caves are particularly valuable for understanding the techniques and processes used by ancient craftsmen to excavate and construct rock-cut monuments. They provide important evidence of the different stages of cave excavation, from the initial cutting of the rock to the creation of architectural spaces and decorative details.

The natural setting of Ajanta is also significant. The caves are located along a horseshoe-shaped cliff rising approximately 76 metres above the valley, with a narrow stream flowing below. Stone-cut steps lead down from the cave complex towards the river. The secluded and peaceful environment of the valley was probably well suited to the life of Buddhist monks. During the monsoon, the monks could withdraw from the outside world and take refuge in these secluded caves, where they could devote themselves to religious practice, discussion, meditation and reflection on Buddhist philosophy.

The Ajanta Caves were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 under four criteria. These include Criterion (i), representing an exceptional artistic achievement; Criterion (ii), demonstrating significant influence on artistic developments in India and beyond, including connections with the art of Java; Criterion (iii), providing exceptional testimony to the development of Indian art and to the important role of Buddhist religious and educational centres during the Satavahana and Vakataka periods; and Criterion (vi), reflecting a direct and profound association with the history of Buddhism.

Ajanta is an important destination for historical tourism. Tourists from India and abroad visit the site to experience its Buddhist heritage, ancient architecture and extraordinary paintings. Tourism creates employment opportunities for local guides, transport workers, hotel and hospitality employees, artisans and other members of the local community. It also contributes to greater public awareness of India’s history and cultural heritage. However, tourism at Ajanta must be managed responsibly. The conservation of the caves requires careful control of temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels, dust, light exposure and microbial growth. Recent research has indicated that high visitor numbers can contribute to increased humidity inside the caves, potentially affecting the rock surfaces and paintings. Therefore, developing a sustainable tourism system is particularly important for Ajanta. The objective should be to allow visitors to experience this remarkable heritage while simultaneously protecting its invaluable paintings, sculptures, architecture and archaeological environment for future generations.

Price Revolution
