Rosetta Stone
The Rosetta Stone is an ancient artifact that played a crucial role in deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics. In 1799, during Napoleon's invasion of Egypt, a stone was found at the mouth of a branch of the Nile called Rosetta, hence it was named the Rosetta Stone. It is a black basalt stone, 4 feet 5 inches wide and 3 feet 9 inches long. Three types of inscriptions were engraved on it. Professor Champollion deciphered these inscriptions. The Rosetta Stone's inscriptions were carved in 195 BC during the reign of the Greek king Ptolemy. The inscription was a letter of praise from Egyptian priests dedicated to a Ptolemaic king.
By studying the Rosetta Stone, Champollion composed a small grammar of the Egyptian language and a dictionary of hieroglyphic script. By rediscovering this lost language, this French scholar laid the foundation for a new field of study known as Egyptology.
