Christian Missionary and the Women Education in India
According to tradition, education was understood to mean the study of sacred religious scriptures. Among the Hindus, the Brahmins, belonging to the priestly class, acquired knowledge of all branches of religious texts. The Kshatriyas and Vaishyas, on the other hand, did not pursue education with the same degree of rigour, but received instruction to develop practical skills. The Shudras and women were deprived of access to the study of religious scriptures. In some upper-class families, however, a few women were taught to read Puranic literature. Muslim women were expected to receive instruction in the Qur’an. However, upper-class Muslim families prohibited their daughters from attending schools. Consequently, whatever religious education they received came either from their homes and families or from private tutors. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the number of educated women was extremely small.
The East India Company introduced English education in India primarily to meet its need for clerks and translators. In 1816, Hindu College was established in Calcutta with the objective of preparing young Indians for positions as assistants in the service of the East India Company. While considerable enthusiasm was shown in supporting the development of schools for boys, similar enthusiasm was not evident in the case of girls. Missionaries were interested in female education and the establishment of girls’ schools because they argued that it was necessary to make women permanently capable of engaging in conversation and communication.
After the establishment of Hindu College in 1816, the Calcutta School Society was established with the objective of promoting female education. Radhakanta Deb, who served as the secretary of the Society, was a patron of female education and helped in establishing the Calcutta Female Juvenile Society. In 1821, the Church Missionary Society brought Miss Cook to Calcutta, where she established thirty girls’ schools for girls belonging to respectable Hindu families. These schools received the patronage of Hindu gentlemen, and Brahmin scholars were appointed as teachers.
In South India, the Church Missionary Society achieved considerable success and established the first residential school for girls at Tirunelveli in 1821. By 1840, the Scottish Church Society had established six schools, which were attended by about 200 Hindu girls. By the middle of the nineteenth century, missionaries in Madras were providing education to approximately 8,000 girls.
One of the most important institutions for female education was the Hindu Female School, established by Bethune in 1849. Bethune was a legal member of the Governor-General’s Council and the President of the Council of Education. The school was secular in character, and Bengali was the medium of instruction. The girls were transported to school in covered carriages bearing a Sanskrit verse, the meaning of which was that educating a daughter was a sacred duty of a father. By 1850, the school had approximately 80 students.
The Hindu Female School was merged with the old Bethune School in 1878 and developed into Bethune College. It received affiliation from the University of Calcutta in 1883. Kadambini Ganguly and Chandramukhi Basu obtained their B.A. degrees from Bethune College and became the first women graduates in British India.
