NATO
During the Second World War, the military superiority of the Soviet Union was established through its resistance against Nazi Germany and the defeat of Hitler. On the other hand, by dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, the United States sought to demonstrate that it was even more powerful than the Soviet Red Army. However, in the Cold War atmosphere after the war, the Soviet Union’s successful atomic explosion in 1949 ended America’s monopoly over nuclear power. In this context, to resist the “expansion of communism” in Europe and to preserve the character of capitalism, the United States, along with 12 Western European countries, formed a joint military alliance in April 1949. This alliance came to be known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The initiative for NATO had begun in 1948. In March of that year, five European countries—Britain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg—signed a joint military agreement in Brussels. Its main principle was that if any member state faced external aggression, all the signatory states would stand together in its defense. The members of NATO at its formation in 1949 included the United States, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Greece, Iceland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Britain. Later, Turkey and West Germany also joined this military alliance. NATO’s headquarters was located in Paris.
One of the primary objectives behind the formation of NATO was to contain the power and influence of the Soviet Union and to ensure the security of the capitalist world, as well as to deal with the Berlin Crisis. In the eyes of the Soviet Union, NATO was an aggressive and hostile military bloc formed through an unholy alliance. The establishment of NATO marked the end of America’s long-standing Monroe Doctrine and the beginning of an active foreign policy. Subsequently, the United States formed several similar alliances. In response, the Soviet Union signed a comparable military agreement known as the Warsaw Pact. Thus, the world once again seemed to move toward the possibility of another great war.
