General Idea about Ancient Egypt (Pre-dynasty Period)
One of the oldest civilizations in the world is the Egyptian civilization. The famous Nile River flowed through Egyptian civilization. The Nile is a north-flowing river, so the delta region of Egypt is located in the north. The Nile would flood at a certain time of the year, causing the banks to overflow. These floods would recede at a specific time, creating fertile agricultural land along the Nile's banks. This river, flowing through the desert's heart, was the Egyptian civilization's lifeblood. Because the Nile's floods were predictable, the Egyptians were self-reliant. Due to the significant contribution of the Nile in the development and sustenance of Egyptian civilization, the father of history, Herodotus, referred to Egypt as the "Gift of the Nile."
To the north, Egypt faces the Mediterranean Sea and Asia, while its southern region connects to the desert areas of Africa. Thus, the northern part was naturally fertile and lush. Due to the influx of Semitic and Libyan people, there was a foreign influence in the north. Although the people of the north and south were neighbors, they did not become close. Despite being a desert area, the history of Egypt began in the south. Most remnants of the pre-dynastic era have been found in the southern part. According to popular belief, the capital of the south Egypt was Hierakonpolis. The ruler here was seen as the embodiment of the falcon-headed god Horus, hence the capital's other name, Falcon City. The capital of the northern part was Memphis. Southern kings unified Egypt by campaigning in the north.
The person who founded the royal dynasty in ancient Egypt (3400 BC) was named Menes. The progenitor of his lineage was the falcon-headed Horus, the foremost deity of the pre-dynastic era. According to legend, King Menes unified the northern and southern parts. Archaeological evidence also supports this legend.
During
the 400-year rule of the first and second dynasties, nation-building efforts
were intense. Menes is known as the "double lord" because he united
the north and south, but their separate identities did not disappear. There
were frequent rebellions in the north. Menes, or Narmer, the king of the first
dynasty, suppressed the rebellion of the Libyans. He captured 120,000 enemies
and looted countless animals. The kings of the first dynasty, Usephais and
Semerkhet, sent expeditions to the mountains of the Sinai Peninsula to collect
copper. King Meibis of the southern region suppressed the rebellion of the
Troglodytes tribe. King Khasekhem of the third dynasty proclaimed himself the
most accomplished conqueror. He united the two parts of the country for the
second time and claimed to be the second Menes. His victory is described on the
walls of the Horus temple in Hierakonpolis. In Abydos, he has a vast stone
tomb, the likes of which had not been seen in Egypt before. Another ruler of
this dynasty, Zoser, built the Step Pyramid, which is his tomb. He was the
pioneer of pyramid construction. The construction of the vast tombs of these
two rulers indicates an increase in political power.
