Egyptian Script: Hieroglyphics
Writing in Egypt began long before the rise of the
dynasties. However, it achieved its developed form during the time of the first
dynasty, known as hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics is a special form of writing
that uses pictures to express content. There are three stages of hieroglyphics:
pictographs, ideograms, and phonograms. A pictograph involves associating a
picture with a specific predetermined idea; for example, using the image of a
lion to represent dominance. An ideogram involves combining one picture with
another to create a specific meaning, such as adding steam and a tongue to the
symbol of a face to represent speech. A phonogram uses special markers to
indicate different meanings of the same word; for instance, if a word means
boat, place, and weaving, adding the image of the earth to the boat picture
signifies place, while adding a silk symbol indicates weaving.
When writing transitioned from pictographs to
phonetic or word-symbolic, each picture became a symbol for a group of words.
The number of such pictures exceeded 600. Gradually, these pictures
evolved from representing word groups to representing letters or characters,
leading to the creation of an alphabet. The number of symbols was reduced to
just 24 letters. However, the Egyptians took time to
develop this alphabetic habit. Evidence of the Egyptian alphabet can be found
in the mines of the Sinai Peninsula (2500 BC-1500 BC), where each letter was a picture.
Using pictorial writing in daily life required the letters to be written quickly by running hand, saving time. This form of running handwriting was called hieratic. By the eighth century BC, hieratic writing had evolved into an even more abbreviated form known as demotic. Although hieratic script disappeared during the Greek rulers' time, demotic, a form of writing shorter than hieratic remained the common script. However, with the arrival of the Romans, demotic script vanished.
The Egyptians invented ink, pens, and paper for writing. They made ink by boiling a mixture of tree resin, potash, and water. They used reed pens dipped in ink to write on papyrus paper, which was made by crushing a water plant similar to reeds called papyrus. After writing, these papyrus scrolls could be rolled up and stored.
