Category Division of Museums
Currently, there are approximately 55,000 museums worldwide, with nearly several hundred in the Indian subcontinent alone. Among these, many museums are not officially documented. Museums are categorized in various ways based on the collection, theme, administrative structure, and the type of visitors they cater to.
Categorization Based on Collection
Based on collected items, the classification of museums is as follows:
Art Museum: This museum primarily collects various forms of visual art, paintings, and other art-related artifacts. For example, the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi.
Art and Craft Museum: These museums focus not only on paintings but also on craftsmanship. For instance, the Nature Museum at Shantiniketan.
Archaeological Museum: This type of museum primarily preserves archaeological artifacts. For example, the Sanchi Museum.
Historical Museum: Various historical items and documents are preserved in this type of museum. For instance, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum in Mumbai.
(5) Biographical Museum: A museum where items related to the life of an individual or a collective group are preserved and displayed is referred to as a biographical museum. For example, the Jorasanko Thakur Bari Museum.
(6) Cultural and Ethnographic Museum: In this type of collection, discussions, and displays revolve around cultural and ethnographic items. For instance, ancient artifacts and utensils used by ancient communities are preserved, as exemplified by this type of museum.
(7) Geological Museum: The Geological Section of the Indian Museum, Kolkata.
(8) Zoological Museum: The collection at the Belghachia Animal Medical Centre.
(9) Botanical Museum: The Indian Botanical Garden in West Bengal.
(10) Science and Technology Museum: The Birla Museum.
(11) War and Political Museum: Examples include the Parliament Museum in India and the Police Museum in Kolkata.
(12) Defense Museum: The Eastern Command Museum at Fort William in Kolkata.

Trust-Operated Museum: The Indian Museum in Kolkata.
