Bakhtiyar Khalji's Conquest of Bihar and Bengal
Bakhtiyar Khalji, whose full name was Ikhtiyaruddin Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji, was a most trusted subordinate of Muhammad Ghori. He is credited with the conquest of Bihar and Bengal. At that time, Bihar was under the rule of weak successors of the Pala dynasty. According to Minhaj-i-Siraj's chronicle Tabaqat-i-Nasiri, Bakhtiyar Khalji attacked and plundered Odantapuri in South Bihar. He also raided several other Buddhist monasteries, killing numerous Buddhist monks and destroying a large amount of wealth and manuscripts. The renowned universities of Nalanda and Vikramashila also fell into his hands.
At the time, Bengal was ruled by Lakshmana Sena of the Sena dynasty. After securing Bihar, Bakhtiyar Khalji advanced toward Bengal. According to Minhaj's writings, he entered Nabadwip disguised as a merchant from Tatariya (Central Asia), accompanied by only 17 horsemen. King Lakshmana Sena was then residing in Nabadwip. The king's guards could not resist Bakhtiyar's sudden and unexpected assault. Terrified and helpless, the elderly king fled through a side door and escaped by boat to Sonargaon near present-day Dhaka.
Bakhtiyar Khalji then captured Nabadwip and the entire Nadia region and established his capital at Lakhnauti (in present-day Malda). Muhammad Ghori later recognized Bakhtiyar’s rule over Bengal.
Why did Lakshmana Sena, a powerful monarch, flee in the face of just 17 horsemen? The answer lies in a combination of circumstances. The main route from western India to Bengal, known as Darbhangga, was well-guarded. The king had come to Nabadwip for religious retreat and was unprepared for war. Bakhtiyar, showing great cunning, avoided the main road and took a forested route through Jharkhand, entering Nabadwip with a small force through unguarded paths.
The defenses in Nabadwip were only meant for the personal safety of the king and not for repelling a military invasion. As a result, Bakhtiyar Khalji’s sudden attack could not be resisted effectively.
